Trend alert! By Hayleys, a family-run custom wallpaper studio based in Yorkshire, recently found that ‘ceiling wallpaper’ Pinterest searches have gone up by 50% this year.
This DIY trend is making its way into homes across the UK and Northern Ireland, with many inspo videos and images online featuring murals, geometric patterns and paintable textured wallpapers. It comes as a move back towards character properties, with many restoration channels and DIYers leading the charge.
“The ceiling is fast becoming referred to as the fifth wall and homeowners are starting to treat it in the same way as any other wallspace and making it a key part of their décor,” Richard Haley, Creative Director of By Haleys, says.
Why The Fuss Papering Ceilings?
One factor in the popularity of this design trend is a wider range of wallpaper offerings on the market. The advent of peel and stick wallpapers has made application easier, faster and more accessible for renters.
Another is the size of homes. As houses get broken up into studios, flats become open plan and people move into cabins, boats and the like, we’re left with less square footage to express ourselves. With limited space, decorating the ceiling can be a way to differentiate zones of the home or add some continuity and flow between spaces.
“A coat of white paint is so often the go-to for ceilings but now we are starting to see homeowners embrace every inch of surface to express the character of the home,” Richard says. White paint seems to be on its way out of homes generally, with many returning back to the 90s Magnolia or deep tones for warmth and character.

If you’re not very good with paste-the-wall solutions, or like the reversible nature of peel and stick, it’s worth considering some of the current products. This botanical bird peel and stick vinyl wallpaper would complement a terracotta room well for some contrast.
Made-to-measure murals can also be a way to display art that feels much grander than a small print and makes a statement. Some of the botanical or fresco-style murals feel classic and would complement a home that focuses on texture and detail, such as a Spanish revival, Scandinavian, or French country home for that pop of colour and visual interest.
